Product Strategy Manager at Bank of Communications International Trust Co., Ltd.
"If all I do is follow processes, eventually the system will replace me."
This nagging concern drove Camellia to redefine her professional trajectory. Working in operations and risk control at a top private bank in China, she watched her company pour massive resources into automation. As processes became faster and more efficient, Camellia realised that staying in her comfort zone meant risking obsolescence.
She aspired to become a true wealth management expert—a role requiring deep global exposure, cross-cultural communication, and high-level business judgment. Ready to challenge herself on an international platform, she made the decisive leap to Hong Kong.
Choosing a World-Class Institution
With five years of experience spanning the Greater Bay Area and a college startup, Camellia was highly selective about her next step. CityUHK immediately stood out for its unique blend of global exposure, a cutting-edge curriculum, and real-world corporate immersion.
- Global Exposure: The opportunity to step out of Hong Kong and learn in completely different environments, such as the Berkeley module, pushed her out of her comfort zone and forced her to think far beyond her own market.
- A Cutting-Edge Curriculum: Determined not to waste time learning yesterday's tools, Camellia chose CityUHK for its forward-thinking integration of ESG, AI, and the latest trends in finance to access what is coming next.
- Real-World Corporate Immersion: Rather than sitting in a classroom all day, Camellia wanted an educational model that allowed her to walk into real companies and connect directly with managers across diverse industries.
Ultimately, these three factors combined to make her decision an easy one.
Where Theory Met Practice
Camellia structured her MBA strategically, choosing evening and weekend classes to spend her days researching local industries and attending workshops. This loop of running the field by day and studying by night paid off double.
"It was not one course, it was a whole way of learning management from real life. CityUHK taught me that business logic is not in textbooks; it is in the real details of the real world."
For an Operations Management project, her team mapped out the supply chain and crowd flow at a popular local restaurant. "Management is hidden in plain sight, you just have to squat down and look closely."
The highlight was the UC Berkeley module, where her team developed an AI-powered travel tool. Pulling all-nighters for cross-border research sparked a profound mindset shift. "The most important question isn't how good your technology is," she explains. "It's about knowing exactly who you are building it for and solving their real pain points."

The Power of a "Living Map"
Managing the intense pace of the programme required a shift from balancing time to balancing resources instead. Camellia reflects: "We can’t balance time every time, so we have to balance resources instead."
"During an MBA, you quickly realise you cannot be perfect at everything, but someone in your cohort is," she notes. "The key is collaborating efficiently, breaking tasks down, and lifting each other up." This collaborative spirit forged a tight-knit culture, perfectly encapsulated by her motto: "Debate hard in class, bond hard after class."
Her cohort, comprising professionals across finance, biotech, technology, and manufacturing, became a lifelong support system rather than a simple professional directory.
"It’s a living map," Camellia says. "Whenever I need to explore an unfamiliar industry for work today, my first move isn’t reading a research report. I message a classmate to ask what their sector's real pain points are, and they always come through with honest, practical insights. They are my best friends and ultimate support system now."
The Outcome: A Career Transformed
Camellia's pivot has fully materialised. Post-graduation, she transitioned from a back-end finance technician to a strategic product innovation role at BOCOM International Trust headquarters.
While her past roles relied on execution, her current position demands innovation and leadership. She credits the CityUHK MBA with three key advantages: a global perspective for product design, cross-industry insights into client pain points, and the leadership frameworks needed to manage under pressure.
"The MBA taught me to ask why first, before figuring out how," she says. "Applying that mindset to prioritise goals has completely changed how I operate at an executive level."
Camellia’s Advice to Prospective Students
For professionals hesitating over the time commitment or return on investment, Camellia views the programme as a long-term asset.
"Do not treat an MBA as an investment needing immediate returns," she emphasises. "It is a seed that grows over the next decade. While formulas may fade, your mindset, network, and self-confidence stay on your personal balance sheet."
"Spend more time asking why instead of how, and share more meals with classmates," she adds. "Networks can disappear, but the true friends you make while stepping out of your comfort zone stay with you forever."
