Unlocking Global Perspectives: Highlights from the CityUHK MBA trip at IESE, Barcelona

This July, our MBA students embarked on a transformative journey to Spain for the International Module delivered by IESE Business School Barcelona. Designed to bridge high-level academic theory with real-world executive practice, this immersive 5-day overseas experience provided our cohort with deep strategic insight and a truly global business perspective.

Dynamic Mornings: Academic Rigor at IESE Business School Barcelona

Each morning, students gathered at the world-renowned IESE Business School campus. Through interactive, case-study-driven lectures led by distinguished faculty, participants explored pressing economic and managerial challenges reshaping global commerce:

  • Global Economic Outlook: Analysing macroeconomic shifts, geopolitical trends, and emerging market dynamics to anticipate future global business disruptions.
  • Strategy & Sustainability: Navigating complex strategic decision-making while integrating sustainable innovation and ESG framework principles into core corporate strategy.
  • Artificial Intelligence & Digital Transformation: Examining how business leaders can effectively harness AI tools, data analytics, and automation to drive organizational efficiency and scale.
  • Leadership & Corporate Culture: Deconstructing high-performing organizational models to understand how visionary leaders foster resilient, agile, and purpose-driven teams.

Through lively debates, collaborative group exercises, and rigorous case analyses, students sharpened their analytical thinking and refined their approach to executive decision-making.

Experiential Afternoons: Industry Visits & Cultural Foundations

In the afternoons, learning extended beyond the classroom into Barcelona’s vibrant business ecosystem. Students engaged directly with executive teams and toured key facilities across diverse sectors, gaining first-hand insight into Spain’s economic drivers and cultural heritage:

  • Port of Barcelona: A detailed exploration of international logistics, intermodal supply chains, and Mediterranean maritime trade connectivity at one of Europe’s most strategic logistics hubs.
  • Codorníu Winery: A look into heritage branding, centuries of craftsmanship, and sustainable international expansion at Spain’s oldest family-owned enterprise and pioneering cava producer.
  • FC Barcelona: A strategic deep dive into sports management, global brand extension, and high-stakes talent management.
  • La Sagrada Família Experiential Leadership Tour: A unique reflection on Antoni Gaudí’s architectural masterpiece, examining how long-term vision, legacy building, and multi-generational leadership translate into modern business leadership.

A Lasting Impact

The module concluded with a celebratory closing ceremony , where students reflected on their personal and professional growth. Beyond the strategic knowledge and industry access gained throughout the week, the shared experience fostered meaningful peer connections, strengthened network ties, and created unforgettable memories.

Our MBA students returned to Hong Kong equipped with fresh executive perspectives, cross-cultural competence, and practical frameworks ready to be applied in an increasingly complex global market.
