Professor Michael Wu is the chairman and responsible officer of Creative Asset Management Ltd., licensed to carry out Type 4 (advising on securities) and Type 9 (asset management) regulated activities under the Securities and Futures Ordinance (Chapter 571 of the Laws of Hong Kong) (“SFO”). Prior to his current role, Professor Wu was the Chief Executive Officer of China Chengtong Asset Management (Hong Kong) Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of China Chengtong Holdings Group Ltd., a central enterprise supervised by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission.

Professor Wu has extensive experience in financial investment and corporate finance. He was the executive director and chief executive officer of Creative Energy Solutions Holdings Ltd. (now known as Kirin Group Holdings Limited), a company listed on the Growth Enterprise Market of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited (the “Stock Exchange”), and the executive director of Incutech Investments Ltd. (now known as DT Capital Limited), another company listed on the Stock Exchange. He has also served as an independent non-executive director for several listed companies in Hong Kong.

Beyond the capital markets, Professor Wu has held senior executive roles at various international banks and financial institutions, including BNP Paribas Peregrine Capital Ltd., American Express Bank Ltd., and CCIC Finance Ltd.

Professor Wu holds a doctoral degree in business administration (Best Thesis Award) and a master's degree in corporate governance (Distinction) from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He also holds an MBA from Northeast Louisiana University, a diploma in Business Administration from Hong Kong Shue Yan College, a diploma in China Trade and Investment from Peking University, a diploma in China Law from the Guangdong Economic Laws Research Centre, and a postgraduate diploma in management from Asia International Open University. He is a fellow member of the Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute and an associate member of the Hong Kong Chartered Governance Institute and the Chartered Governance Institute.

Professor Wu is actively involved in community service. He is currently the chairman of Suen Mei Hearing Charity Fund Ltd., a member of the Fundraising and Social Enterprise Committee of the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation, and the vice-chairman of the PolyU DBA Alumni Association Ltd.

Professor Wu is also dedicated to education. He is an adjunct professor at City University of Hong Kong and has been engaged as a visiting lecturer by various universities and tertiary institutions, including the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Metropolitan University, Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Management Association, and Chu Hai College, covering subjects such as fintech, corporate governance, finance, strategy, and banking.

He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Research Institute for Business and ESG Centre at Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, a member of the University Council, and an Advisory Board member for the Department of Economics and Finance at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. He also serves as the school supervisor of Sha Tin Wai Dr. Catherine F. Woo Memorial School and a school manager of Dr. Catherine F. Woo Memorial School.

I enjoyed gaining a great deal of inspiration through the exchange of ideas with MBA students.

How do you combine theoretical concepts with the latest industry practices and business trends?

I will use multiple real-world cases to integrate the concepts of corporate governance in both theory and practice.

What books would you recommend CityUHK MBA students to read? Why?

Factfulness, written by Hans Rosling, Ola Rosling, and Anna Rosling Rönnlund, may help students maintain a fact-based worldview. It teaches them to recognise and avoid common pitfalls that lead to misinterpreted information.

What business topics should CityUHK MBA students be the most familiar with when they graduate from our programme?

Students should prioritise independent thinking and judgment, as these are essential for navigating an ever-changing environment and managing the abundance of biased information in today's world.
