PhD - Operations Research (MIT)
Professor Stephen Shum is currently Associate Provost (Quality Assurance and Accountability). He is serving as the Dean of the College of Business.
His research focuses on supply chain management, revenue management, and the operations-marketing interface. He teaches courses in operations management and revenue management. He has received RGC GRF grants for numerous research projects and was awarded the Dean's Research Excellence Award in 2019 and the College of Business Teaching Excellence Award in 2020.
Professor Shum is an Associate Editor of Naval Research Logistics and the Journal of the Operational Research Society and serves on the Editorial Review Board of Production and Operations Management.
He earned his Ph.D. in Operations Research from MIT and holds BSc degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics from UCLA. In his free time, he enjoys cooking.
What do you enjoy most about teaching CityUHK MBA students?
I absolutely love chatting with the bright minds in our CityUHK MBA programme. These students bring such energy and fresh perspectives to the classroom—it's a blast!
How do you combine theoretical concepts with the latest industry practices and business trends?
I spice up my teaching with real-life cases, diving into practical examples to explore how the theories we discuss play out in the real business world.
What books would you recommend CityUHK MBA students to read? Why?
Skip the heavy textbooks! I’d recommend grabbing a copy of The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, or BusinessWeek. These publications keep you in the loop with the latest buzz in the business world.
What business topics should CityUHK MBA students be the most familiar with when they graduate from our programme?
Operations management is a big deal. Remember, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch!” I emphasise this point in every class—it’s a mantra you’ll carry with you into the business world.
