Prof. Yong Chin Tan is an Assistant Professor of Marketing at City University of Hong Kong. His research explores new technologies in marketing and strategies for influencing customer behavior in online retail and has been published in the Journal of Marketing and Harvard Business Review.

Originally from Singapore, he earned his Ph.D. in Business (Marketing) from Singapore Management University. Before pursuing his doctorate, he spent several years working at marketing research agencies Nielsen and Kantar Millward Brown.

What do you enjoy most about teaching CityUHK MBA students?

I enjoy the dynamic energy that MBA students bring to the classroom. Their openness in sharing their thoughts and ideas creates a lively and engaging learning environment.

How do you combine theoretical concepts with the latest industry practices and business trends?

I strive to incorporate real-world industry examples into my teaching as much as possible. Through in-depth case studies in their assignments, students also gain valuable insights into current industry practices.

What books would you recommend CityUHK MBA students to read? Why?

Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life...And Maybe the World by Admiral William H. McRaven is based on a commencement speech by a Navy SEAL and offers valuable life lessons and wisdom.

It’s difficult to pinpoint a specific topic, as MBA graduates must stay up to date with the latest developments in their field or industry.

Stay open-minded and embrace opportunities beyond your comfort zone. Don’t let your undergraduate major or past work experience limit your career possibilities.
