Career Evolution:
Embracing the Jungle Gym Mentality

In her book Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg presents a powerful metaphor for career development, comparing it not to a traditional ladder but to a jungle gym.
She writes, "Ladders are limiting; people can move up or down, on or off. Jungle gyms offer more creative exploration. There’s only one way to get to the top of a ladder, but there are many ways to get to the top of a jungle gym." This metaphor beautifully captures the essence of our career journeys. They are rarely straightforward; instead, they are filled with lateral moves, unexpected turns, and even the occasional step back. Each of these movements, however, plays a crucial role in our personal and professional growth.
I believe many of us choose the MBA programme to redefine or elevate our career paths. My journey in the IT industry began with a strong focus on marketing and sales. However, I felt compelled to delve deeper into the technical aspects of the field. This commitment allowed me to bridge the often-separated worlds of business and technology, evolving into a professional fluent in both language.
Earlier this year, I encountered an unexpected opportunity that shifted me from a role in marketing management to IT project management. This transition has vividly illustrated Sheryl Sandberg’s “jungle gym” metaphor: our careers are not straightforward climbs but rather dynamic, non-linear paths filled with twists, turns, and endless possibilities. It’s the courage to envision new opportunities and the determination to pursue them that truly shape our journeys.
By being admitted to CityUHK MBA, I have already taken a bold step forward: imagining and creating a new future.
So, what’s next? How do you transform your imagination into concrete goals and achieve them? The first year will be crucial in finding these answers. Let me share some a few thoughts based on my own experience.
First, set clear goals and define your career direction. Start by analysing your interests, strengths, and market demands. Once your goals are established, evaluate the gap between your current skills and where you want to be. Develop a practical plan and be prepared to adjust it as you go. A well-defined goal will act as your North Star, guiding you through the complexities of the ever-changing career landscape.
Second, build a personal brand that sets you apart. A strong personal brand helps you stand out and is not just about your professional skills; it’s also about your values, work ethic, and how you connect with others. It’s the unique combination of these elements that makes you memorable and distinct in a crowded field.
Third, actively build and expand your professional network. Success is not solely a result of individual capabilities; it’s also about leveraging a robust network for resources and opportunities. Engage with classmates, professors, alumni, and industry experts. Your network is not just a support system but a springboard for future success.
Last but not least, commit to continuous self-improvement and be ready for challenges. In our rapidly changing world, continuous learning and adaptability are essential. Embracing this mindset will help you discover new opportunities and achieve success in unexpected ways.
Embarking on this transformative journey, CityUHK MBA is both enriching and incredibly rewarding, offering experiences that will fully prepare you for your future careers. Beyond acquiring knowledge and skills, this programme is designed to cultivate and refine your mindset. It encourages you to think critically, adapt quickly, and tackle problems with creativity and resilience. In essence, it's about shaping not just what you know, but how you think, equipping you with the right mindset to succeed in any field you choose to pursue.
