Tyler Toscani, a 2022 graduate of the MBA programme at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), has made significant strides in his finance career with the career support he has from the MBA programme. Originally from Canada, Tyler was working in the finance sector when he decided to move to Hong Kong, the world’s leading financial hub, to advance his career. With a recommendation from his boss, who was pursuing a DBA at CityUHK at that time, Tyler chose to enroll in the MBA programme at CityUHK to enhance his expertise, broaden his career prospects, and expand his network in the finance industry.
Tyler appreciated the holistic approach of the CityUHK MBA programme. The curriculum encompassed a wide range of subjects, from strategic management to data analytics, providing him a well-rounded business education. This broad perspective was instrumental in enhancing his financial acumen while enabling him to explore various aspects of business. Coming from the West, the program also helped him understand and balance Eastern and Western perspectives, deepening his understanding of Asia, China, and Hong Kong.
One notable case study required him to compare the success stories of the two largest e-commerce companies: Amazon from the U.S. and Alibaba from China, highlighting their differences in business operations and management styles. This experience was particularly useful in equipping him with insights that are essential for navigating the global marketplace.
Reflecting on his studies, Tyler highlighted three courses that were particularly valuable to him. The first is the Practical FinTech Applications course, which offers students a unique opportunity to explore the latest developments in the FinTech market. The course focuses on current trends and applications and most impressively, it features a series of guest speakers - business owners and CEOs, who shared their experiences, insights on trends, and the challenges they faced.

The second course is Project Management. In this course, students set a personal life goal, work-related or not, and analyzed how to achieve it, considering the skills, tactics, and individuals they needed to engage with. The professor guided them throughout this process, assisting them in managing their “Self” projects.
The third course is Corporate Finance, in which Tyler acquired essential skills specifically for the industry he is in. The course encompassed both theoretical and practical elements of corporate financing, tackling real-world challenges in areas such as capital budgeting, capital structure, cross-border financing strategies… This course enabled Tyler to enhance his ability to innovate and adapt financial decision-making frameworks in diverse international markets.
Apart from academic studies, he encouraged all students to engage with industry leaders through networking events. This not only enriched his learning experience but also helped him build a valuable professional network and foster genuine friendships.
Tyler's journey through the CityUHK MBA programme illustrates the importance of a comprehensive education that blends theoretical knowledge with practical experience. One standout feature of the CityUHK MBA programme is its emphasis on experiential and interactive learning. For Tyler, the CityUHK MBA has provided a solid foundation for his career, affirming its value for anyone aspiring to succeed in the finance industry. Currently, Tyler is working in a security finance fintech company, continuing to develop his professional career, which he is passionate about.
